Wildwood, New Jersey officials are moving forward with plans to close the city's famous boardwalk overnight. The proposed ordinance, introduced during the Board of Commissioners meeting on April 8, aims to shut down the boardwalk from 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. year-round. The initiative is designed to enhance public safety and improve the quality of life by preventing loitering and large gatherings during late-night hours.
According to Deputy Mayor and Commissioner of Public Safety Steve Mikulski, the closure is not intended to restrict business activities but to curb potential issues that arise in the early morning hours. "These hours are designed to limit late-night crowds and support a welcoming friendly atmosphere for everyone to enjoy the best of our Boardwalk," Mikulski said. The ordinance must pass a second reading and public hearing, scheduled for April 22, before it can become law.
If approved, the Wildwood Police Department will enforce the new regulations, and signs will be posted to inform visitors of the boardwalk's operating hours. The city has faced challenges managing unsupervised teenagers and young people on the boardwalk in recent years. Incidents such as a 17-year-old being charged with aggravated assault and weapons offenses during the July 4 weekend in 2025 have prompted the city to take action.
The proposed closure is part of a broader effort to maintain a safe and enjoyable environment for all visitors. As the busy summer season approaches, Wildwood officials hope the new measures will help keep the boardwalk vibrant while addressing ongoing concerns about late-night behavior.
