The Cape May County Zoo in New Jersey is planning a new exhibit featuring Humboldt penguins and Chilean flamingos. The zoo aims to construct habitats for 20 penguins and 30 flamingos, enhancing its commitment to conservation and education. The project is estimated to cost over $4 million, with $3 million allocated for the penguin habitat and $1 million for the flamingo habitat. The Cape May County Zoological Society has launched a fundraising campaign to support this initiative.
Ed Runyon, Parks Director at the Cape May County Park & Zoo, highlighted the importance of these habitats to NJ.com, noting that Humboldt penguins face threats from habitat loss and overfishing, while Chilean flamingos depend on fragile wetland ecosystems. The new habitats will educate visitors on these challenges and the significance of global conservation efforts.
The zoo, which attracts over 700,000 visitors annually, plans to build the habitats at the site of the former World of Birds aviary. The penguin exhibit will feature glass walls for underwater viewing and a sophisticated life support system to maintain clean water.
Construction is expected to begin in the winter of next year according to the Cape May County Herald, with completion anticipated by spring 2026. Donations can be made through the Cape May County Zoological Society's website or by mail.
