The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (NJMVC) has announced "Real ID Thursdays," a new initiative to help residents obtain Real ID-compliant licenses. Starting Thursday, March 20, nearly 4,500 additional appointments will be available each week at licensing centers across the state. This move comes as demand for Real IDs increases ahead of the federal deadline on May 7, when Real ID-compliant identification will be required for domestic air travel.
Acting NJMVC Chief Administrator Latrecia Littles-Floyd stated, "Over the last few months, we’ve seen a dramatic increase in demand for Real ID from our customers, and we’ve repeatedly added and reallocated appointments to better meet that demand." The new initiative aims to expand access further, assisting more customers who need or want to get a Real ID.
Residents can book these added appointments starting Friday, March 14, through the NJMVC website's appointment scheduler. Alongside Real ID Thursdays, the NJMVC will also host Real ID Mobile Unit events on Saturdays, beginning April 5, to further increase availability.
To obtain a Real ID, New Jersey residents need to bring specific documents, including two proofs of address, one verified Social Security number, and at least six points of identification, such as a birth certificate or U.S. passport. The introduction of Real ID Thursdays and mobile unit events is designed to alleviate the high demand and ensure residents can meet the upcoming federal requirements.
