Comedian Aries Spears is in hot water after a fiery social-media rant aimed at two of the brightest new stars in the WNBA. In a video shared to Instagram, Spears compared Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese with Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark. He began by claiming his remarks were “not about race,” yet his comments quickly turned harsh and personal.
Spears called Reese “hot garbage” and, in the same breath, called Clark “bananas” and “the truth.” He went on to say that if Reese “spent more time in the gym instead of trying to be a runway model,” her game would improve. Spears insisted fans should ignore the “race card” and focus only on which players are talented.
Many viewers were angered not only by the criticism itself but by the profanity and disrespectful tone used toward Reese. Social-media timelines filled with fans and fellow comedians who said Spears crossed the line. Sports writers reminded followers that Reese is a rookie adjusting to the professional league after winning a college championship at LSU, while Clark arrived in the WNBA after breaking NCAA scoring records at Iowa.
Supporters of both athletes pointed out that critiquing a player’s performance is fair, yet personal insults and gender-based remarks are not. Some fans even noted the double standards often applied to women’s sports and the extra scrutiny placed on young female athletes.
As of now, Spears has not issued an apology.
